"Remember that guy, Ace Ulsterberg?" the redheaded officer asks. He leans against the doorframe while his bald companion is hunched over an open filing drawer...
Here the female officer chimes in: "I believe he's part of a certain bureaucrat's security detail." "No fucking way!" The redhead is dumbfounded. "How'd he pull that off?"
"Don't know. He just kinda popped into my mind." "Ahem, excuse me, Chester," says a female officer who threads her way into the file room. "Where is old Ace now?" the bald officer asks.
The lieutenant is practised in the art of putting on a show for one's superiors.
"The guy who got canned for trying to arrest that diplomat?" the bald man asks. "Well, technically he got canned for being shit-faced on the job. But yeah, trying to arrest the ambassador from Gottwald while shit-faced was probably a contributing factor..."
Back off -- now! This man has diplomatic immunity. It serves no good to accuse him of a crime he didn't commit.
You should have heeded your partner's warning. Now it's too late.
The bald man squints at a file, then returns it to the cabinet. A new drawer opens with a grinding screech. He turns back to the redhead in the doorway. "What made you think of him now?"
He won't tell you how to do your job, but a good police officer knows when to listen to his partner.
It's hard to say. It's been so long since you wore yours.
Get the gun, lieutenant, it's okay. It's safe, he thinks. Just get it.
Just trust me and go for the gun.
This man is your half brother. You feel it. But why?
These machines sometimes harbour traps, he thinks -- alarm systems and the like. Let's be careful.
This has lowered his opinion of you -- but only a little.
I'm put off by this religious stuff, he thinks -- and maybe the ceiling-climbing, too. It's all very hard to square with the lieutenant's own view of reality.
Cuno must be already on the island, wondering where the hell you are... or maybe he doesn't care. Yeah, he probably doesn't care.
